Planning and Purchasing

During the summer, when we wrote our grant, businesses gave us quotes for this fish tank.We ask businesses to give us bids for our fresh water tank to use our money wisely. Our local Fins, Furs, and FeathersFins, Furs, and Feathers won the first order on our grant.Because so many sales were going on in the fish world at Christmas, we saved money on many of our items. With the money we saved, we hope to add an additional tank to our project. We have to plan for upkeep of the animals over the next year. There are many more decisions to make on our budget!

Our students worked so well together.

Planning and positioning every item takes time for our perfectionists.

6th Grade, 7th grade and 8th graders worked 3 afternoons to get the tank set up after school.team_wiki.JPG

Our theme had to go with the fabulous shipwreck that we found in Greensboro at a great sale.

Everyone is looking for the other half of the ship.

The chest of jewels will open and close with the air bubbles from a pump when we get water.

pirates_jm_wiki.JPGThe students voted to go with the Pirates of the Carribean theme. Victor, an East alumni, who works with Fins, Furs, and Feathers, persuaded us when he helped deliver our tank.

Everyone is pleased.

Our two eigth graders spent two hours filling up the tank with 75 gallons of water. Mr West brought his garden hose to run into the lobby of the school for us. We ran the water into a bucket to protect the rocks and arrangements of plants from the force of the water.

Only the rock structure forming the fish hiding places had to be rearranged.

Good job folks!! This is a beautiful Cichlid play ground.

The rocks and shells we have collected from the beaches along our coast had to be boiled before we put them into the tank. Why? Normally shells and fossils of shells would not be suitable for a fresh water tank. Do you know what effect these shells have on the pH? What should the pH of a Cichlid tank be to raise healthy Cichlids? If you would like to know more, wait for Takeyah's pages and learn about the chemistry of our tank.

Thursday afternoon and the pump is running correctly. We're smiling now!! We are ready for fish at last.

We decide to wait till Monday to get the fish so everyone can monitor the tank. Good decision, team! The temperature spiked out of range over the weekend. After adjustments, we are set. We were surprised that the temperature only took 2 hours to adjust. The tank is getting cloudy after 3 days. Why? Read the link below to learn more.

New tank syndrome: This is the most important part of setting up a fish tank. It must become a microbe farm. Why do we need bacteria in a fish tank?

Thanks to the World of Cichlids for these pictures; we are not able to get good shots of our babies yet.CICHLIDS_2.jpg

WORLDCICHLID_COM_2.jpgWe started out with 2 white, 2 orange, 4 blue, 4 yellow, and 4 black striped. Fortunately Cichlids are very hardy. Only 2 died the first night. They are under warranty. We'll replace them soon.

Why do you think we couldn't go with all yellow and blue, our school colors?

The Jordan Fundamentals Team has had some great ideas to teach the students at East about our newest additions. Expect to hear more from them this month.
